One of the most important phases in a new roof installation is the process of removing the old roof. If the roof is composed of asphalt shingles, this removal process can be time and labor intensive. While not difficult to remove, tearing up an asphalt roof will result in an enormous amount of refuse. One person will mostly likely not be able to accomplish it in a single day, and the removal of the shingles from the property will take a considerable amount of time as well.

An asphalt roof can weigh well over a ton, and landfill costs can be steep. It is highly recommended to consult a local Denver roofing contractor, as it will reduce the hassle of the project immensely. If a professional is not hired to do the removal, it is advisable to rent a large trash container and keep it near the house. Otherwise, the discarded shingles will have to be left around the perimeter of the property and will create an unsightly, chaotic mess. Be sure to install roof jacks a few feet from the edge of the roof to collect the shingles as they fall.

Begin tearing off the old shingles at the farthest section from the trash unit and work towards it. This will make it easier to discard the shingles. Either a garden fork or a roofing shovel is recommended for doing the work.

A roofing contractor from All Around roofing of Denver CO can answer any questions you have about insulation or metal roofing.

Begin by removing the ridge caps and work underneath the underlayment to remove it at the same time. Starting from the top, work down to the bottom of the roof in a three foot area at a time. Extra care will need to be taken when removing roofing around chimneys, skylights and other penetrations.

Once the majority of shingles have been removed and the shingles disposed of, take down the roof jacks and loosen the remaining shingles. Do not remove them with the fork or shovel, as they will slide off the roof. Instead, remove them by hand once they are loosened and carry them to the garbage unit. Once the shingles have been removed, pry the flashing off and dispose of it. This is not absolutely necessary, but it will produce better results.

Once the shingles and underlayment have been completely cleared, make a thorough search and remove any nails that did not come out with the shingles. Once this has been done, sweep the roof. It will need to be clean before a new underlayment is laid. Be sure to inspect the sheathing for any rot or other damage that may be present, and replace it as necessary. The roof is now ready for a new underlayment.
